Generally, P is a very happy child. She has a great sense of humor and loves to laugh and make others laugh. That is, if she knows you.
In the presence of strangers, P becomes silent and withdrawn. F and I often think of her as a turtle trying to crawl back into her shell. She has no shell, so she clings to me and buries her head in my shoulder. It could take any time between 5 minutes and 5 days before P will open up and let the new person into her world of joy and laughter.
The photographers taking pictures at P’s preschool last week were not lucky enough to meet the joyful Penelope. According to her teachers, the photographers tried every trick in the book and pulled out every stuffed animal from their bag. Not even Elmo could make P smile that day.
